More info

For millenniums the black and red spotted ladybug (Coccinella), “Dressed in scarlet“, has been regarded as a symbol of luck. For many people the colourful insect signals the beginning of springs but most of all they are appreciated by farmers.

There are over 1,500 regional nicknames for one of the most loved insects in the world. Thus the black and red spotted ladybugs are also known as lady-cows, may-bugs, golden-knop and golden-bugs and are welcomed by all. Who hasn’t once snatched a flying ladybug and proudly presented it on one’s finger? The beetle is particularly appreciated by gardeners and farmers for its usefulness as it eats several thousand plant lice off plants during its lifetime. In optimal environmental conditions the ladybird multiplies astronomically so that at times, it can come to a downright invasion. Sometimes huge swarms of several million of them are blown onto sandy beaches or they populate whole neighbourhoods. Besides its agricultural usefulness the ladybug represents a lucky symbol in many countries worldwide. In the past, farmers believed that the striking beetle was a gift from Virgin Mary and therefore, named it after this biblical figure. In Sweden it is believed that the seven dots represent Mary’s seven virtues. Naturally the most widespread species with its bright red colour is associated with love. In France it is said, that a man on which a ladybug lands will shortly afterwards get married.

There are over 6,000 species of these winged lucky symbols worldwide however several species are highly endangered because their natural habitat is being destroyed.
