More info

Mount Ararat, also referred to as The Great Ararat, is located in the Eastern Anatolian highlands near the border of Armenia and Iran. It is a dormant volcano which was last active in the year 1840. 5,137 m above sea level, it is the highest mountain in Turkey. It is said that the biblical Noah’s Ark after the great flood got stranded in the Ararat mountain range. However, scientific documents concerning this statement do not exist. A geological formation near the peak which is referred to as “Ararat anomaly” became well-known through aerial photographs and fueled speculation about remains of Noah’s Ark.

The Ararat is also Armenia’s national symbol. Up until 1915, the settlement area of the six Armenian Eastern provinces in the Ottoman Empire was mostly around the striking mountain. It is also pictured on Armenia’s crest. The base camp for Ararat ascensions is located at about 3,000 m. The further ascent to the high camp at about 4,100 m is through moraines which consist of gritty rubble and fine sand. The route to the peak inevitably leads over ice and snow. On a clear day it offers a fantastic view of distant parts of the country.

Verbascum wiedemannianum - this showy Mullein is a typical component of the Central Anatolian steppe plant community in the Central Anatolian Plateau of eastern Turkey, in Western Asia.

Location: At 1,400 m (4,600 ft) elevation in sandstone soils - 20 km from Sivas in the direction of Kanga.
