Church of the Savior on Blood (St. Petersburg - Russia).
In 1881, on his way to his Winter Palace, Tsar Alexander II became the victim of an assassination. A bomb hit the Imperial carriage and injured the Russian Tsar so severely that he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. On the site where his blood had flowed, a memorial church was to be built in honour of the Russian monarch. The son of the killed Alexander II took on the most famous Russian painters and architects of that time (1883-1912) for the construction of the Church of the Savior on Blood.
Using Old Russian, colourful construction style they deliberately set an example of anti-western architecture, which normally defined the townscape of St. Petersburg. The church, with its colourful towers and exterior fronts, strongly resembles Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow. The church, which is over 7000 square meters insize, is covered with mosaics and is deemed to be one of the most significant constructions containing mosaics.
