The meteorite was first discovered by two boys in 1906 in Muonionalusta, which is located in northern Sweden. Since then many more pieces have been recovered.
The pieces of the meteorite display an unusual crystalline structure called Widmanstatten patterns. These unusual patterns are formed from the molten pieces of a planetary core that cool extremely slowly in the vacuum of space.
It has been estimated that it took about 1,000 years for these molten pieces of planetary core to cool by just 1 degree.
